These prayers, from the Diocesan Vocations Service, are offered to all who are sick, housebound or lonely, that they may offer up their suffering to the Cross, in prayer for an increase in vocations. Prayers of Suffering My Lord Jesus, you bore so many wounds for the sins of the world. You gave yourself up to be tortured, scorned and crucified on the Cross. Today I give you my pain, my loneliness, illness and heartache. If it please You, take it as a small gift to be lost in the tide of your holy blood, for the sake of all souls in purgatory and for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. Have mercy on Your humble servant, Lord, as I commend my spirit into your hands. Amen. For union With Jesus Let not my abandonment, and my sorrow, and my bereavement go to waste. Gather up the fragments, and as the drop of water is absorbed by the wine in the offertory of the Mass, let my life he absorbed in You; let my little cross he entwined with your great cross, so that I may purchase the joys of everlasting happiness in union with You. Amen.
Did Jesus really rise from the Dead? Yes! St Paul said that if there is no resurrection, then everything we believe is a complete waste of time. But is there evidence that it might be?
Well - first, we can be sure that Jesus truly died on the cross. We are told that when the soldier put the spear in his side ‘blood and water’ came out. This indicates that Jesus’ lungs were full of fluid - he had suffocated as he hung there.
Secondly, everyone knew where Jesus’ body was placed. The women visited the tomb. They knew who the tomb belonged too. Soldiers even guarded it.
Thirdly, even the enemies of the first Christians agreed that the tomb was empty after his death. It would have been easy to prove he’d not risen if his body could be found. It couldn’t. It has disappeared.
And fourthly - most importantly - when Jesus was arrested and crucified his disciples fled in fear for their own lives. One of them had betrayed him. Another denied he ever knew him. Yet in three days they were transformed from fear to joy. No longer afraid that they might die, they were ready to give their lives for what they had seen. And their message has spread throughout the world ever since. No one is prepared to die for a lie.
